What is Kaffarah?

Kaffarah (expiation) is a religious obligation for a Muslim who intentionally breaks a fast during Ramadan without a valid Islamic reason. The prescribed expiation is to either fast for 60 consecutive days or, if one is unable to do so, to feed 60 needy people two meals each, providing them with a full day's sustenance. This requirement underscores the sanctity of the Ramadan fast and the importance of fulfilling one's spiritual commitments.

Kaffarah also applies to other situations such as breaking an oath, where the expiation involves feeding ten needy people, clothing them, or freeing a slave. If none of these are possible, a fast of three days is observed. The severity of Kaffarah reflects the gravity of the violation while still providing a path to redemption and spiritual renewal.

  • Applicable when a Ramadan fast is intentionally broken without valid reason
  • Fast 60 consecutive days without interruption
  • Or feed 60 needy people (₹3,540 at ₹59/meal × 2 meals × 60 people)
  • Cannot be waived; must be fulfilled to make up for the broken fast

Kaffarah for Broken Oath

  • Applicable when a sworn oath is broken
  • Feed ten needy people one full meal each
  • Or clothe ten needy people, or free a slave
  • If unable, fast for three consecutive days
