What is Zakat al-Fitr?
Zakat al-Fitr, also known as Fitrana, is a compulsory charitable donation that every Muslim who possesses wealth beyond their basic needs must pay before the Eid al-Fitr prayer. It is a purification of the fast and a means of ensuring that even the poorest members of the community can celebrate Eid with dignity and joy. The amount is approximately ₹60 per person, making it accessible for all who are obligated to give.

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) enjoined Zakat al-Fitr as a purification for the fasting person from any idle or obscene speech, and as food for the needy. Whoever pays it before the Eid prayer, it is an accepted Zakat, and whoever pays it after the prayer, it is merely an ordinary charity.
