Fidya
A charitable compensation for those unable to fast during Ramadan due to valid long-term reasons.
What is Fidya?
Fidya is a charitable compensation prescribed for Muslims who are unable to fast during Ramadan due to a valid, long-term reason such as old age or chronic illness. Instead of fasting, the individual must feed one needy person for each day of Ramadan that is missed. This provision reflects the mercy and practicality of Islamic teachings, ensuring that those who genuinely cannot fast can still fulfil their spiritual obligations.
For each missed fast, the fidya amount is equivalent to the cost of feeding one person two meals or providing one meal (sadaqat-ul-fitr). The compensation must be given to those in need, ensuring that the intention of the fast — developing empathy for the hungry and less fortunate — is still fulfilled through the act of feeding others.
"Fasting is for a fixed number of days. But if any of you is ill or on a journey, the same number of days from other days. And as for those who can fast with difficulty (e.g., old and sick), they have a choice either to fast or to feed a poor person for every day of fasting missed."
